A few extra words
It's amazing how much difference a few extra words can make. Sarah recently had an orthodontic expander installed. As with all orthodontics, food choices become more limited. The assistant, showing me a list, said "here are the foods that she's not allowed to eat." Unfortunately, all Sarah's autistic brain heard was "... she's not allowed to eat". We've been struggling since Monday to convince her that she can't wait until June (when the expander is removed) to eat. This would all be comically funny if it weren't life threatening. Some day, looking at her beautiful smile, I'll laugh about this...

Gray in my life
Gray - and the lack of it - has such a presence in my life. Depression causes entire days to be just gray and dismal. Those days, it's a challenge just to focus. Life seems drab and just blah. Those are the gray times that I hate. Those are the times that I wish for a life without gray.
There are times, however, when I am cursed to have a life without gray... a different kind of gray. Living with someone with autism completely changes your perspective on the world. Just today I realized that the gray zone - the distinction between black and white - has been fading from my world view. Having to explain everything to my daughter, who only comprehends black and white, has led me to simplify my own world view.
I want to use this blog to remind myself of the consequences of doing so, and to record some of the funny moments that arise when you view life without the gray.

Old Time Rail Ride

I think that it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the lives of others are so much more than our own. After all, who likes to publicize their failings? No one.

How Curious!
Went to the Children's Museum with the kids today. They really enjoyed the Curious George exhibit. At the rocket, there was a kiosk where you could type in your email and they would send you a shot of your child in the rocket. Here they are!

Christmas Letter 2006
December 2006: We hope your family has had a wonderful year. We miss all of you! Here’s an update on our family:
Sarah (9.5, 3rd grade, 46” tall, 52 lbs) This year’s accomplishments: figuring out how to use the TiVo and the DVD player. Both require reading, so we’re pretty certain that she knows WAY more than she lets on. Her favorite color is still purple, and her collection of Care Bears has officially taken over her room. A true collector, she has branched out into Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer “stuff”. She did break her arm this summer, but all is well now.
Madilyn (5, preschool, 48” tall, 50 lbs): This kid loves anything that has to do with a ball – basketball, soccer, t-ball, you name it. Talk about social! She simply doesn’t want to be alone, ever... In March of this year, Madilyn started taking Taekwondo lessons, and really enjoys it. She is SO PROUD that she can break a board with her fist! (Mom, however, is afraid).
Our summer vacation this year was a trip to Branson Missouri. Everyone had a great time. Grandma & Grandpa K joined us with their RV, providing a fun opportunity for some “sleepovers” at Grandma & Grandpa’s. Hard to tell who enjoyed those more, us or the kids…
Gary is still working at 3M, and although he tried everything he could, he wasn’t able to find a job in Michigan after the completion of his six-sigma certification program. Looks like we’ll be in Minnesota for a while longer. The job he currently has does require him to travel to and support the Detroit facility, so there is hope…
I stay busy with the house, kids, and teaching Sunday School and home-study seminary for the 14 to 18 year olds in our ward. Most days I just try to keep my head above water.
I say it every year, but it’s true - Our home has a guest bedroom that we’re always eager to fill, so if you’re looking for a place to escape the summer heat (or if you really like winter) come join us for a few days, weeks, whatever! We’ll leave the light on.
